Who wins?

The 85th Academy Awards takes place this Sunday, February 24th.  A four minute video featuring clips of every film that has won a best picture Oscar asks the question “Next?” before showing clips from the nine pictures nominated this year.  I love this video and am looking forward to finding out who wins best picture this year.

A Canadian hockey fan

I grew up loving Hockey Night In Canada.  I remember being awake well past my bedtime listening to HNIC via my old transistor radio tucked under my pillow.  I still love watching hockey and truly enjoy the HNIC opening segments.  Here are a few of my favourites.

Along with many other book lovers in Canada, I just finished watching Canada Reads 2013.  “Two Solitudes” by Hugh MacLennan was championed by Jay Baruchel – an excerpt of which he read to open HNIC this past weekend.

“Rosy and Grey” by The Lowest of the Low open up a 2011 HNIC broadcast.  The footage is from the Lee’s Palace concert that Dave and I attended –  we are both huge fans of the band and actually arrived so early for the concert that we were able to lean against the doors of Lee’s Palace and listen to them warm up.  You can read Dave’s review of the show here.

The Sadies – another talented Canadian band – open up a recent HNIC broadcast with their song “Whispering Circles”.

The Tragically Hip actually premiered their song “At Transformation” on the HNIC broadcast of Game 7 of the playoff game between the Washington Capitals and and New York Rangers.

And what hockey fan can forget this – the 60th anniversary celebration of the longest running sports TV show in the world.

Tumblr – yes or no?

I like Tumblr.  It doesn’t replace this blog but is a nice way to reblog items of interest quickly – I also like the fact that I can actually post something to Tumblr from my phone easily.  As I get older I find I have less free time to “muck about” with technology – ease of use is a big selling point for the 48 year old me.

Unfortunately not everything I post over there appears here – although I can automatically cross-post from Dogtown Blogs here to Dogtown Blogs there, I can’t cross post from there to here.  Or at least I haven’t figured out how yet (see “muck about” point above).

Here’s something I re-blogged on Tumblr but wanted to include here as well – it makes me think of @eco1138 and @pjmixer.  There have been a few nights that @suze20TO and I were convinced they did indeed use bourbon as toothpaste.

What do you think about Blackberry’s marketing approach?

I’ve always been a Blackberry fan – one of those die hard “original” Blackberry users.  Lately, it’s been hard to be a fan.  Will Blackberry 10 rejuvenate them?  They are certainly sparing no expense on marketing it.  Here’s my favourite so far:

For the love of music

Dave Grohl debuted his new documentary Sound City: Reel to Reel at the Sundance Film Festival.  It’s a true celebration of music specifically focused on the Sound City music studio and the artists who made records there.  You can read more about the film here.  To launch the documentary, Grohl asked many of the musicians who made music at the studio to perform as “supergroup” Sound City Players.  You can read about last night’s concert here as well as see some of the fan filmed footage of the show.  I’ve included a few of my favourites below as well as the trailer for the movie.

As a side note, I also just found out that Dave Grohl will be a keynote speaker at SXSW in March.
